This topic is something I find quite interesting especially living in Hong Kong where the humidity and the pollution is high. Being outside all day or stuck in an office can take a toll on your skin and health so it best to make sure that your air quality at home is clean.
I find I just feel so horrible when the pollution and humidity is high because I get huge headaches and feel lethargic along with the dust going around makes me sneeze like crazy!
Our homes are becoming tighter and more confined these days so to have good circulation is a must. If you or someone your know suffers with asthma or dust allergies then take note. (Open windows when the temperate is cool and when the humidity is low)
In Hong Kong we all have at least one air-con in our homes along with maybe a few fans and also some dehumidifier. But also if they are not taken care of or regular cleaned then the point of having them is lost.
I make sure to empty my dehumidifier daily, clean the fans (kitchen and rooms) and the aircon filters at least once a month. There are actually specialised companies that I have tried out, they come to your home with a huge machine and clean all the aircon filters / curtains/ sofa/ beds/ pillows / anything where dust mites and bugs may be trapped then they clean your air and I’m quite a clean freak so what I saw leftover was shocking.
I also have a home Atomizer along with incense and candles. I add lots of natural oils mixed with water (some of my favourite being: Lemongrass, Ylang Ylang, Lavender for night time, rose and when the season comes around the beautiful scents of christmas) this makes your air smell and feel fresher along with the emotional benefits to your health.
If you can get some fresh plants in your home either they be flower or herbs. Spider plants / Cactus / Aloe Vera they help clean the air and attract dirt.
Use non-toxic cleaners with only natural scents or fragrance free at home or make them yourself using cheap vodka! I also use a microfiber dust mop (easily found at most markets).
Obviously it’s important to regularly change your bedsheets and vacuum often your floors especially if you have any rugs/mats/carpets and more often if you own pets. Clean in-between your blinds (they have special cleaners for this) and once in a while clean your curtains.
Don’t forget about your spring cleaning too. I always say if I haven’t used it in a year then it goes out!
Mold and Mildew:
Dust mites and mold love humidity so it’s important to keep the humidity in your home between 30%-50%.
Although mold and mildew is found everywhere, in Hong Kong it really gets to your items if you don’t take care of them, the amount of clothes / bags/ shoes I have had to throw away because I was careful was sad to see. I buy and use multiple amounts of Anti-mold products / filters now such as the below:
